Hero Bio:

Lauren Gilbert Reid was born in Gold Hill, Storey County, Nevada, March 28, 1896. He was the only son of William Garrence and Ellen Reid, now residents of Virginia City, Nevada. Although reared on the Comstock, he was also well known in other western Nevada counties, where he had a legion of friends. He had made a trip to Carbondale, Colorado, but when the call to colors came, he entered the Service as a representative of his native State (June 24, 1918). Soon after his entry into the army he was sent to France and placed in Company G, 308th Infantry, of the 77th Division.

This division entered the Argonne fight on the extreme left of the line, September 26th, 1918. It was the fate of the young soldier, who had been in the Service only a little over three months, to be one of those in the famous “Lost Battalion” and to lay down his life for the cause. He was wounded by shrapnel in the Bois d’Apremont, northeast of Binarville, Argonne Forest, on October 7th, and died the next day of his wounds at 5:30 p. m. (October 8, 1918) Besides his parents, in Virginia City, two sisters survive him; Mrs. J. H. Clark and Mrs. Orville Green.
